Class, Etc. An Established Class That Keeps On GrowingClass, Etc. is a community within the larger church community. Its members represent a variety of professions including teachers, lawyers, engineers and clergy. Some have been members since the class began and some have been there only a few weeks. Some are lifelong Methodists and some have joined after spending most of their lives in another denomination. What they share is a love of ideas, the church and family Class, Etc. is a family. They care about each other and about others. Practically the entire class budget – about half of which is raised through contributions and the rest from volunteer ushering – goes to outreach projects, church budget items and scholarships. Members are actively involved in Crossroads Community Services and Family Gateway. From its beginnings through the merger of two small couples classes over thirty years ago Class, Etc. has grown to be one of the larger and more influential classes at First United Methodist Church. With a membership of over 100 the class has outgrown the capacity of members’ homes to host the whole group, so to better provide for personal interaction the membership is divided into four “small groups” whose makeup is changed annually. These groups meet four times a year for social functions. All-class get-togethers such as business meetings and the Christmas party are held in larger venues such as a community room or a restaurant with a meeting room. On Sunday mornings Class, Etc. meets in Room G09 on the lower level of the church. The format is lecture/discussion and the programs – often presented by class members – are informative and challenging. Class, Etc. keeps on growing not only in size but also, we hope, in our understanding and participation in the Christian life. We invite you to join us in this undertaking. Come, see what Sunday School can be. |
